Everest Base Camp & Gokyo Lake Trek – Adventure Beyond the Ordinary

Overview:

If you’re looking for an extraordinary adventure in the Everest region, the Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes trek offers the perfect blend of iconic highlights and off-the-beaten-path exploration. Known for its series of shimmering turquoise lakes and the thrilling Cho La Pass, this route takes you deep into the heart of the Khumbu while avoiding the crowds of the standard trail.

Designed for trekkers with around three weeks to spare, this journey combines two major Himalayan treasures—Everest Base Camp and the serene Gokyo Lakes. While over 30,000 people trek to the base of the world’s highest peak each year, only a select few choose this more adventurous and less-traveled route, which also includes the Renjo La Pass. The Gokyo Valley offers some of the most unobstructed and breathtaking views of Mt. Everest—views that many say surpass even those from the base camp itself.

Starting in Lukla and entering through Sagarmatha National Park, the trail leads to Gokyo Lakes and the panoramic viewpoint of Gokyo Ri, before crossing the dramatic Cho La Pass to reach Everest Base Camp. The return journey via Renjo La Pass and Thame completes a spectacular circuit.

Along the way, you’ll pass through welcoming Sherpa villages, gaining insight into their rich culture and traditions, as well as the shared Buddhist heritage of both Sherpa and Tibetan communities. Expect an ever-changing landscape—prayer-flag-draped passes, Mani stone walls, alpine meadows, stark high-altitude deserts, rugged hills, frozen lakes, and towering snow peaks.

This trek isn’t just about reaching destinations—it’s about embracing the diverse natural beauty and cultural richness of the Everest region. Every step offers something new, from spiritual encounters to jaw-dropping scenery, making it one of the most rewarding adventures you can experience in Nepal.

Day 3: Fly to Lukla (2840 m) & trek to Phakding (2610 m): Walking distance: 7.5 km: 3 hours

After early breakfast, we depart from Kathmandu via airplane for Lukla (2840 m). The flight takes about 35 minutes to reach Lukla airport from Kathmandu. The Lukla flight is one of the most dramatic short distance flights in the world. The Lukla Airport is located on a hill and consists of a single runway that drops off towards its end to the deep gaping valley below. Surrounded by tall mountains and jaded hills, the airstrip at Lukla is quite fascinating and the flight is a thrilling adventure in itself. Upon arrival at Lukla, the changes are immediately felt. The mountainous landscape becomes quite prominent and the air carries a crisp freshness to it, which only Himalayan atmosphere carries. From Lukla, the trekking trail slowly moves towards the Cheplung Village. View of the sacred Mount Khumbila from the village at Cheplung is gorgeous. From there, a gradual walk downwards leads to the village of Phakding. The terrain is amazing and tall hills surround the trail like giant mounds of emeralds. From Phakding, the sight of the Kusum Kangraru Mountain can be seen. The village of Phakding lies in the Dudh Koshi River valley north of Lukla and contains many guesthouses and lodges for the service of tourists and trekkers.

Overnight at the Guesthouse.

Note: The weather in Lukla is very unpredictable. Sometimes due to bad weather the flight may be delayed or cancelled. If the flight is cancelled, you will have to return back to the hotel in Kathmandu. The transportation back to the hotel and accommodation on this night is not included. If the weather is clear next day, you will get either 3rd or 4th flight to Lukla. If still the weather is not clear, there will be an option for helicopter flight also. The cost for helicopter flight is not fixed. It will be quoted by the airlines on the same day. You will have to pay an additional approx. 150 USD for the helicopter flight from KTM to Lukla. Although this problem is rare, it is our duty to let you know in advance.
