This hidden Himalayan valley is one of the least developed areas in Nepal, located in the Sankhuwasabha district at the base of Mount Makalu (8,481 m), the fifth-highest mountain in the world. Throughout the trek, Makalu’s presence dominates the horizon. The Barun Valley Trek remains unknown to many travelers, meaning you can enjoy peaceful trails and walk for days through untouched landscapes. It’s a perfect escape from daily stress, where you can breathe fresh mountain air, feel the wind, and find calm in the steady rhythm of your steps.

The journey begins in Makalu-Barun National Park, where no two days look alike. we’ll see tall waterfalls plunging into deep gorges, forests meeting massive rock faces, and at higher altitudes, fields of alpine flowers scattered among rocks. Large sections of the trail are uninhabited, requiring tent camping, which offers a closer connection to nature under the vast Himalayan sky. This trek reveals diverse ecosystems, from broadleaf forests to alpine meadows, with around 3,000 plant species (including 25 types of rhododendrons), 440 bird species, and rare wildlife like the red panda, musk deer, wild boar, and snow leopard. Some plants and animals are found nowhere else, making the valley a “living laboratory” for scientists.

The highest point of the trek, Yangle Kharka (3,600m), is a beautiful alpine meadow adorned with prayer flags. Here, we can stay in a lodge or sleep under the stars. The return follows rugged trails back to Tumlingtar for a flight to Kathmandu.
