Overview
Looking for an adventurous expedition route in the Everest region? This route blends the classic base camp trail with the brilliant blue lakes of Gokyo and a rewarding pass crossing.
Expect dramatic Himalayan views, Sherpa villages, glacier valleys, and careful acclimatization days designed for a safer and more enjoyable high-altitude journey.
The Gokyo Lakes trek adds a unique dimension to the standard Everest Base Camp itinerary. Instead of returning the same way, you cross the challenging Cho La Pass (5,420m), connecting two of the most spectacular valleys in the Khumbu region.
Program Itinerary
Take an early mountain flight to Lukla (2,860m) and begin trekking through pine forests and riverside trails to Phakding (2,610m). Overnight in a local teahouse. The flight itself is an adventure with stunning Himalayan views.
Follow the Dudh Koshi river, cross suspension bridges, and climb steadily to Namche Bazaar (3,440m), the vibrant gateway to the high Himalaya. First glimpse of Everest on a clear day.
Take a rest day for acclimatization. Hike up to the Everest View Hotel for panoramic views, visit the Sherpa Museum, and explore the colorful markets of Namche.
Follow the trail branching off towards the Gokyo Valley through rhododendron forests. Pass through the small settlement of Phortse Tenga and ascend to Dole (4,200m).
Continue along the valley with views of Cho Oyu and the Ngozumpa Glacier. Arrive at Machhermo (4,470m), a small settlement with stunning mountain backdrop.
Trek to the stunning Gokyo Lakes (4,790m). Spend the afternoon exploring the turquoise glacial lakes and enjoy breathtaking views of Cho Oyu, the world's sixth highest peak.
Early morning climb to Gokyo Ri (5,357m) for arguably the best panoramic view in the Everest region — four 8,000m peaks visible. Descend and trek to Thagnak (4,700m).
The most challenging day. Cross the glaciated Cho La Pass (5,420m) with crampons if needed. Descend to Dzongla (4,830m) with a great sense of achievement.
Join the classic Everest Base Camp trail. Trek to Lobuche (4,910m) with views of the Khumbu Glacier and surrounding peaks.
